Amazon Order Defect Rate: How It Works and How to Improve It

Amazon Order Defect Rate (ODR) measures qualifying problems at the order level. It is not the percentage of products that are physically defective, and it is not calculated by adding every complaint or return.

For US seller-fulfilled orders, Amazon evaluates a 60-day period and requires ODR below 1%. Use the current marketplace policy and the period shown in your Account Health report. Read Amazon’s ODR policy.

What counts toward ODR?

  • Negative seller feedback: qualifying one- and two-star seller feedback, rather than a buyer’s product review.
  • A-to-z Guarantee claims: claims that qualify under the current policy. Review the claim decision and any appeal outcome; do not assume every claim counts.
  • Service chargebacks: qualifying service-related card disputes. Fraud-related chargebacks are excluded. Amazon explains that a service chargeback on a seller-fulfilled order counts when the buyer’s bank decides in the buyer’s favor.

Amazon’s chargeback guidance explains the distinction. The defect report and current policy should determine which orders you include.

How to calculate Order Defect Rate

ODR = affected orders with at least one qualifying defect ÷ total eligible orders in the period × 100.

Count each affected order once. For example, suppose your reporting period contains 1,000 eligible orders and 10 distinct orders with qualifying defects. The calculation is 10 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 1%. If one of those orders has both negative seller feedback and a qualifying claim, it remains one affected order.

This example illustrates the calculation; it is not a client case. A delivery delay, refund or negative product review alone should not be added as a separate ODR defect.

Check the exclusions and decisions before adding defects

Review the status of feedback removals, claim decisions and successful appeals. A removed feedback impact or a claim decided in your favor can change the record. Fraud chargebacks do not belong in the service-chargeback calculation. Confirm that each entry actually affects ODR rather than assuming that every customer dispute does.

Download the current defect report from Account Health and keep a copy. Record the order date, defect type, decision, relevant evidence and any outstanding review. Compare like reporting periods when checking whether the rate has changed.

What happens if ODR reaches or exceeds 1%?

Amazon requires a rate below 1%. A performance problem can lead to restrictions on seller-fulfilled offers or selling privileges. Read the actual warning or Performance Notification to understand the required action.

Use the deadline and response instructions in your Performance Notification. Check the defect report and supporting records before preparing the response. Improving ODR does not, by itself, confirm that a separate suspension has been resolved.

How to investigate and improve ODR

  1. Review the affected orders. Compare the defect report with shipment records, buyer communications and claim or chargeback decisions.
  2. Dispute a genuine error through the correct process. Explain the particular mismatch and supply authentic supporting records. Do not pressure buyers to change product reviews.
  3. Investigate confirmed service failures. Look for the actual cause in inventory accuracy, handling, delivery, packaging or the customer-service process.
  4. Complete relevant corrections. Record what changed, who owns the process and how it will be checked. Distinguish completed actions from plans.
  5. Monitor the same reporting window. Keep order-level records and check follow-up decisions. Normal business improvement is different from trying to manipulate the metric.

Choose fulfillment arrangements that fit your products and operations, and monitor the performance measures that apply. If a restriction is already in place, address Amazon’s specific request as well as the underlying operational issue.

Preparing an ODR suspension appeal

Read Amazon’s message alongside the defect report and previous submissions. Where an operational issue is established, a corrective Plan of Action may explain the supported cause, completed corrections and preventive controls. Where a defect is incorrect, address the error and the evidence instead.

Keep the Performance Notification, marketplace, reporting period, affected orders, relevant records and previous replies together. Use the response route currently available in Account Health. If Amazon rejects the submission, identify what remains unanswered before sending another version.
